WACCA
Doug sings a great range of songs, mainly up¬ tempo Country and Rock"n" Roll, and children’s songs. The children are most welcome to select an instrument provided and join in on maracas, tambourines and small guitars, and pretend to be a rock star (WACCA loves jammin’ with the kids). WACCA and Doug give out free balloons to the children. WACCA and Doug have appeared on “Australia’s Got Talent” and have won prizes for busking at Festivals such as Kyneton Daffodil Festival and Whittlesea Country Festival in 2008-09. They have appeared at a variety of country shows, fairs and corporate events.

The Sjoelbak stand is one of the most popular sections of the Holland Festival. You will find folk of all ages engrossed in the game all day. There are usually four Sjoelbakken set up, each manned by a volunteer to help festival goers learn how to play the game and understand the rules - allowances will be made for our younger players. Festival players will be awarded a small prize according to their game score. Any score of 70 or above will receive a prize. This year a Sjoelbak with playing stones and rules will be raffled at the end of the Festival. All Sjoelbak players during the Festival will be offered the chance to purchase a ticket for the draw. The Sjoelbak game is hundreds of years old, which is obvious when you look at it closely. It is simply made and has four scoring sections, each with a value on its bridge which is visible from the player’s end. It was originally lit by an oil lamp and later by candles. Values were marked by holes or indents, so in bad light, the value of each section could be decided on by touching the markers. Competition level Sjoelbakken have strict specifications for the size and weight of the stones. The hobby Sjoelbakken used at the Holland Festival also meets these standards. The original design has been modified to include a lockable storage space with a sliding lid to house the thirty playing stones and a copy of the rules (in English). Each Sjoelbak is stained, and furniture polish is used to maintain the playing surface so the stones glide more easily. The takings for the day at the Festival are never high, but our focus is to demonstrate and pass on a little of our culture to today’s generation. It is satisfying to see folk of all ages enjoy our game of Sjoelbakken. The Sjoelbakken and Sjoelbakken activities for the Holland Festival are provided by Henk & Lenie Bierman |

Lucky Strings ('Touwtje Trekken')
Since the HOLLAND FESTIVAL came to Sandown Jennie & Eef Nagengast have been part of the festival with the very popular children's game called LUCKY STRINGS (Touwtje Trekken). They designed and build this colourful attraction themselves and over all these years there has never been a price increase. For $ 1.- the children can pull a lucky string to win one of the many prizes. Every-one wins a prize, so every-one leaves happy. All profits are directly going to the HOLLAND FESTIVAL and the money is used for the general benefit of the Dutch community. LUCKY STRINGS is now a well established attraction at our yearly festival and we hope you try your luck at this most colourful stall. |
