Kids Activities

If you are interested in any aspect of our Dutch culture then come along to the Holland Festival and see the many displays and activities on offer. See Dutch arts and crafts, paintings, delft blue ceramics, hindelopen art, and even the Dutch clog makers at work. The Dutch Australian Heritage Centre has wonderful exhibition at the Festival and displays items from the culture and traditions that Dutch migrants brought with them to Australia.

At the Holland Festival you could see four generations of one family together enjoying the fun. Traditional Dutch games and equipment have been reproduced and games such as Sjoelen and Klaverjassen are played during the Festival.

Please visit this page on a regular basis as we are preparing our activities for the next festival.

sjoelbak SJOELBAKKEN

The Sjoelbak stand is one of the most popular sections of the Holland Festival. You will find folk of all ages engrossed in the game all day. There are usually four Sjoelbakken set up, each manned by a volunteer to help festival goers learn how to play the game and understand the rules - allowances will be made for our younger players.

Festival players will be awarded a small prize according to their game score. Any score of 70 or above will receive a prize. This year a Sjoelbak with playing stones and rules will be raffled at the end of the Festival. All Sjoelbak players during the Festival will be offered the chance to purchase a ticket for the draw.

The Sjoelbak game is hundreds of years old, which is obvious when you look at it closely. It is simply made and has four scoring sections, each with a value on its bridge which is visible from the player’s end. It was originally lit by an oil lamp and later by candles. Values were marked by holes or indents, so in bad light, the value of each section could be decided on by touching the markers.

Competition level Sjoelbakken have strict specifications for the size and weight of the stones. The hobby Sjoelbakken used at the Holland Festival also meets these standards. The original design has been modified to include a lockable storage space with a sliding lid to house the thirty playing stones and a copy of the rules (in English). Each Sjoelbak is stained, and furniture polish is used to maintain the playing surface so the stones glide more easily.

The takings for the day at the Festival are never high, but our focus is to demonstrate and pass on a little of our culture to today’s generation. It is satisfying to see folk of all ages enjoy our game of Sjoelbakken.

The Sjoelbakken and Sjoelbakken activities for the Holland Festival are provided by Henk & Lenie Bierman
